"In decentralised projects, your community IS the project"
He gets it. Was just watching this just now and I thought for the benefit of James and those who still remain here after a year, the quote at just after 14:20 would be useful:

That's true for the majority of the projects that are quite literal vaporware. When you have no product, what else do you have besides community management? We do have a product that is live and working. I'd call that the product, project and main thing to focus on.
You truly believe that? Once you have a working product you can dispense with your supporters.. that how trusted brands/business work? Marketing done effectively and sustainably means building new relationships and maintaining them - you are competing for attention (as well as money) after all and there are gazillions of other ways for people to spend their attention and money - more everyday. Without starting and maintaining relationships you are picking at the lowest common denominator of those who are desperate - that the market we want to be in?
You can have both though.
Yeah sure. But the communication and participation towards the community has got a lot better. Very nice to see comments here and there. I think many things are moving in a better direction. :)
How so have they gotten better?
The dev is commenting on these threads almost on a daily basis nowdays when before he could be unheard of for weeks at a time. That's pretty clear progress in my opinion.
