There's a stigma against playing the ball on the ground in GAA and it angers me so much. Even in big games there'll be situations where just kicking it along the ground is a good idea but players have it drilled into them that "YOU'RE NOT PLAYING FUCKING SOCCER" from a young age, so they try and pick it up and lose it.

I know it's a joke, even simply popping a rolling ball up into your hands will prompt a shout of "bend your fucking back"

Even though Dublin are rat bastids Bernard Brogan's chip into the hands of a team mate in the All-Ireland a few years back was fucking sexy

For reference this is Gaelic football, a sport where the ball is generally played in hand, rarely on the ground.

Because it's Irish (and an aspect of culture that England tried to extinguish) and football's English there was historically, and to an extent today, a resentment towards what were considered "foreign games"(i.e English). So techniques from soccer are often frowned upon, oft times resulting in a bollocking from your manager regardless of how successful you were in that endeavour.

Plenty of Irish footballers were also Gaelic footballers. Seamy Coleman was apparently lethal back in the day and Jack Grealish also played well into his teens in the County Warwickshire region.
