I love how people blame their out-of-shapeliness on lack of access to resources like expensive food and trainers. Bitch, please. I got in shape with wendy's dollar menu and a chin-up bar.

Find a gym with a squat rack for $10/month, watch youtube for form suggestions, and eat within your TDEE. It's just not that complicated.

I love her! I've been doing her videos every other day, and going to the gym on the days in between. She's got a free calendar on her site that has suggested videos for each day of the month, so I've been using that since I wouldn't know where to start otherwise. Normally I do about 5 short videos consecutively which comes out to about an hour, though some are longer. I find her workouts pretty hard, but then again, I only started exercising a month ago. I also find her really encouraging, she's cheerful and it helps to motivate me. I would definitely suggest checking her out!

This, my wife and I have been spending a lot more in the last 2 months since I started hitting the gym again as we have different food needs and I’m trying to use as few supplements as possible, I offered last night to simplify things and meal prep us for a week. We both work and I explained that it would make her day easier, so she accepted, I spent $75 all in all for 2 adults and a kid. Kept it pretty simple oatmeal mixed with berries and whey, chicken fajita soup, and roasted veggies with ground turkey, also got cashews and eggs for a quick snack.

Edit: I don't begrudge anyone his/her gym choice. You do you. I'm not walking into a place that claims to be a judgment free zone as part of their business model when they actively judge others. I won't endorse that kind of hypocrisy.

I spent about $50 on weights and a yoga mat a few years ago and have found 1000's of videos on youtube for home workouts, and I live in a small apartment. If I can work out without a gym, so can anyone else.

4
swimgewd•

for sure. I was looking into gym and fitness classes in the new year looking to drop weight, and for the price of 3 months at the gym/One month of BBJ I was able to get adjustable free weights, an adjustable bench, and resistance bands. Just another $100 for good, comfortable running shoes and I have all the workout equipment I need. Down 20lbs since I started measuring with the scale, working out and doing IF because it makes CICO that much easier for me and let's me eat the type of dinner I'm comfortable with eating. Also, I've saved probably twice the amount I spent on buying equipment by not needing to go out for lunch every day.

3

I'm at my goal weight now, but I did IF to lose the last few pounds and it worked great. I still do it occasionally if I eat too much on the weekend or something. I just don't like counting calories, so it's easier for me to do the IF. Now that I'm just maintaining and trying to get toned, I try to eat protein, veggies, fruit; and avoid carbs as much as possible (I still have dessert sometimes). I sometimes go to a local gym for $5 just to get out of the house and to add some variety to my workout (Plus my employer reimburses me up to $50 a month).

I love when they hide their lack of motivation to improve themselves on money

I went from 33 BMI to 21 BMI by cutting out a few key problem foods and significantly cutting my portions and intermittent fasting and talking many many many very long walks, my weight loss cost me literally $0 (in fact I gained a bunch of money buying less food so I guess it cost me like negative $1k or something)

These people hiding behind lack of money as an excuse lol fuck off

I loved that argument. If Oprah lost weight because she's rich enough to hire personal trainers and buy "the best food", and the writer is fat because she isn't wealthy enough to do the same... why did Oprah get fat again, why is Oprah still fat today, when she's richer than she's ever been?

11
iggypop19•

Everyone knows only rich people can be thin and stay thin. I mean they can afford trainers, dieticians, doctors and fancy home gyms. It's to difficult for me to throw on a pair of basic walking or running sneakers and use the enviroment around me like the sidewalk or a field to run or do lunges or squats on. How dare you even suggest I find cheap reasonable ways to work out! I don't even own nice clothes and I can't work out in old sweat pants with a plain t shirt in front others. I need at least some brand name stuff to look cute plus I can't afford the gym, new gym clothes and a decent shoe on sale. So I'm gonna just not work out and blame it all on my finances. How dare you imply that I to can lose weight like the celebrities to I'm to poor! /s

Sadly that's how people think way to often. I can workout most days and I have no gym membership. I have a running sneakers that are old but work fine, a nice area to run/walk outside and an old stationary bike my parents gave me for free in my apartment. Plus an exercise ball, a cheap skipping rope and some hand weights from my parents as well. I use all of it and it costs me nothing but 45 minutes to over an hour a day of some cardio and resistance training. I eat healthy for the most part, track calories on free apps like MFP and I only really have to factor in the costs of my groceries each week. My workout outfit when I'm in my apartment alone doing the bike or stretches? A sports bra, underwear and a tank top. I don't even waste laundry on pants if no one can see me working out here. If I run outside it's the same outfit but with some legging capris's from Costco thrown on and some old sneakers.

yet she was still chronicling her struggle with weight loss and featuring panels full of unhappy fat people. Fat adults, fat children, fat people who couldn’t find love, who couldn’t find jobs, who needed life saving surgeries, and of course her own fat self.

She didn't kidnap anyone from the street. You could make an argument against featuring children but if they were adults they wanted to be on the show to help find love, find jobs and get life saving surgeries.

the blood, sweat and fat of thousands of people is on her hands.

That sounds... messy.

How many fat people, like me, sat through her television show learning exactly all the ways to hate ourselves? How many fat people have destroyed their bodies and health based on advice from her show – or the shows she spawned like Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz?

Her mum's methods were fucked up but this seems like a case of not being able to see outside your own bubble. How many fat people healed their bodies and health based on advice from her show? Though I agree that Dr Oz can bugger off with his nonsense cures.

the world’s two worst devils (weight loss and math)

Hey! You leave maths out of this!

with a disgustingly high “failure” rate. WW was struggling, financially, to reign in more victims with it’s stupid numberey counting trash that turns eating into literal torture

WW has changed drastically recently to mirror intuitive eating but for many years it was just simplified calorie counting. The failure rate was high because of people giving up. I say that as someone who used to go and then gave up and (shock, horror) gained the weight back that I'd lost. Also... leave maths alone! I enjoy eating food more now that I'm calorie counting than I did when I was just shovelling any old food in.

I can’t look up to a “fat” person (SHE’S NOT EVEN THAT FAT, Y’ALL)

She was overweight (possibly obese, not sure) so quit with the gatekeeping.

All the thin women and girls who developed eating disorders, those people who exercised themselves nearly to death, those who gave up on life early because of discrimination, and those who’ve settled into a less than ideal life because they felt their body wasn’t suited for happiness, love, or success.

My life is certainly less than ideal. However, I have the power to at least try and change it. Will my life still suck when I've lost weight? Maybe. But even if I'm still single and in a shitty job and a shitty flat at least I'll be healthier and find it easier to move around in the world. Sounds good to me.

How many people have "nearly exercised themselves to death," in comparison to how many people willingly eat too much and not exercise- to death?

I understand anorexia and other body dismorphic disorders can and do cause people to go to the extremes, but I have to imagine those numbers pale in comparison to the number of people who willingly overlook the health risks of eating too much and NOT exercising.

(And I might add that the super skinny - bones showing "model ideal" is a thing of the 90s-2010s. Instagram is showing us that being toned with a big booty and thicc thighs is in style, so that's what the "impressionable teens" are trying to emulate)

Her mum's methods were fucked up

Making her watch a tv show? Sure it made the kid feel bad about herself instead of the likely intended message: look up to this role model, it’s possible to lose weight. It’s not clear if the child was the reason mom was “silently crying” but she thought it was all about her, being a child and all...

It sounds like this woman was a spoiled child who had never before been told to stop playing and do a little work. And yeah an hour feels long to a kid but the idea of stopping your fun for one hour should not sound like torture and injustice. so dramatic. I think she’s trying to activate a sexism trope by picturing her brother carefree and her trapped indoors. But we’re talking about ONE time, one hour maximum to do nothing but watch a tv show.

7

She said she was made to watch it many times so I was thinking the mum possibly had issues with pressuring her too much (or at least not pressuring in a healthy way) but you could be right, she could be exaggerating for effect.

It's hard to believe this woman takes a tv show so personally even after 15+ years. I'm mentally ill, and I used to do that. Now that I'm properly medicated I don't. Is it mental illness? Is it lack of personal responsibility to make themselves happy?

If there is one thing I have learned from Oprah, it's that it doesn't matter how much money and resources you have - in the end only you can make a change.

Also the end of the article, using 'me too' in an entirely different context.... uhm...

21
Aliwithani•

I take it she doesn't realize that Oprah has the money to buy part of weight watchers. That's why she started shilling for them and all the new add for their new plans. Her doing WW, is as much about the state of her bank account as her waist.

This article disgusts me. This woman is 15 years older than me yet writes like someone much younger than I am. The fact that she calls Oprah, a successful woman who suffered a terrible childhood a demon is appalling. Having to watch Oprah's show is incomparable to the abuse, poverty, and racism Oprah endured as a child.

What's worse is the hi-jacking of a speech meant for victims of sexual abuse. I've been obese and I've been sexually assaulted. I went down to a healthy BMI in 6 months, but I can never go back to the way I was before 4 shitty boys decided I was no more than an object for them to have their way with. These two things have absolutely nothing in common, and I am seething with rage at the sheer audacity she has to steal from another movement in order to make her whining and lack of accountability seem like a legitimate problem when it isn't.

I do agree Dr. Oz needs to stop shilling snake oil(when he should know better he's a brilliant cardiovascular surgeon) but you should also not get your advice from the television. Especially when you know people are trying to sell you the thing. Also, he's a good example of doctors being super specialized but not necessarily experts on nutrition, in the U.S. you want a registered dietician for that.

raises hand I did. I lived in the country and we only had three channels: CBC, CTV, and Global (I'm Canadian). I also liked Dr. Phil.

I wouldn't say Oprah was the demon of my childhood though. Like, I think looking back, it was inappropriate but better than when I could watch CSI/true crime docs with my parents, and still all of that was far from the most problematic parts of my childhood.

I thought the weird part of the article was that she was "forced" to watch it by her crying mother. Was it just the episodes on weight or did Mom perhaps just feel moved and want her daughter to join? I don't know the whole story but judging by the tone, I suspect selective memory.

It's really privledged to say a t.v. star was the demon of your childhood when said tv star was literally dealing with molestation, rape, and heaps of abuse as a child. I don't like to gatekeep someone's suffering, but jfc this woman needs to get a handle of what a terrible childhood is and isn't.

Maybe I'm being weird here (as usual) but television is not a reliable source of information on health related issues. Also, that was 20 years ago. 20 years ago people believed any new fad diet they were served. Today we have the know-how. But we also have an overabundance of food, fat acceptance and glorification. And we hate people who struggle to become thinner, as if they have insulted us personally.

Oh no, a woman who faced all kinds of hardship in her life while working her way up from nothing, and who uses her money to help others and advance social causes, isn’t doing things in the way that I want her to do them!

It’s sad to read that both the writer and Oprah are victims of abuse but the writer should not be mad that Oprah has taken so many steps to be healthier both physically and mentally. Oprah has helped countless women and girls and I’m glad she has helped herself to lose weight and feel better about herself and her body.

I love how even in the FA community fellow fat people or still fat people can't win. I remember a while back when Melissa McCarthy the actress lost some weight and suddenly her FA fans couldn't take it. She changed herself how dare she! She's still fat but she's not as fat as she was I'm so pissed she'd change herself even if she did it for herself and her family. There have been plus size models who have chosen to of their own accord to lose weight to get down to a standard model size. And oh the shit storm the models got for betraying their chubby sisterhood by going mainstream and conventional with their new slightly skinnier ass. How dare they turn their back on us! Betraying us big girls by being healthy and caring about their future. What a bunch of bitches they are for losing weight /s

Oprah may be a bigger lady and had fluctuations but she's always made it clear she wants to try to be healthy most of the time. She's well aware of her own health issues and age so she knows it not good to carry obesity with her forever. What's the harm in Oprah being aware of her health and taking pride in it? At least Oprah is open about her problems and past trauma's that led to her over eating for years to deal with it. At least she doesn't live in denial. But oh right Oprah is betraying the fat sisterhood by taking of herself now. What a horrible person she is.

And? She had to watch Oprah because she was fat and her brother apparently wasn't. Not that I think that's the way to go, but it's perfectly understandable. Maybe if her mother foretold her son would be fat, he would've been watching Oprah too.

I'm guessing that Oprah never lost the weight and kept it off because it keeps her relate-able. She's a billionaire, and one of the most famous people alive. If she really wanted to be thin, she could have had her chef make sure all the food she had for the day was under her TDEE. But no, "Oprah struggles with her weight just like me" makes her continue to seem like a normal person, while being not a normal person.
