[Resolved] Frenchman admits killing girl who vanished from Alps wedding

Resolved

First time creating a post but since the only other thread about it is a month old and things have changed I thought I should probably bring it up.

Here is the old post created by u/94sleuth:

Estelle Mouzin, the 9-year-old french girl who disappeared on her way home from school 15 years ago.

In that thread it says the suspect, Nordahl Lelandais, had been cleared -Edit- of Estelle's disappearance. However, he is the French man referred to in the title who has now admitted killing the 9 year old Maelys De Araujo (after they found traces of her blood in his trunk) and has led LE to where he dumped the girl, where they found her skull and some other remains.

From the article:

PARIS (AP) — A former military dog trainer confessed Wednesday to “unintentionally” killing a 9-year-old girl whose disappearance from a wedding party in the Alps last year prompted nationwide concern and months of fruitless searching.

Investigators at last found Maelys De Araujo’s skull and some other remains Wednesday in a snow-covered ravine six months after she went missing, according to Grenoble Prosecutor Jean-Yves Coquillat.

Police were led to the remote site by chief suspect Nordahl Lelandais, who was arrested and charged after her disappearance but repeatedly had denied wrongdoing. He was a guest at the same wedding in Pont-de-Beauvoisin, near the French mountain city of Chambery.

Lelandais decided to come clean Wednesday after investigators found traces of the girl’s blood in the trunk of Lelandais’ car, the prosecutor told reporters.

Lelandais told investigators that he killed her accidentally, hid the body near his house and then returned to the wedding party. He later dumped the child’s body in the remote ravine.

His lawyer said Lelandais had let children at the wedding party look at dogs he had in his car.

After Maelys went missing, police questioned more than 200 potential witnesses, and hundreds of volunteers helped search the area for days. Police dogs found the girl’s scent but lost it in the wedding hall parking lot, suggesting she may have been forced into a vehicle or gotten into one voluntarily.

In his confession, Lelandais did not explain the circumstances of the girl’s death, the prosecutor said.

“Lelandais asked investigation judges to question him today, because he had revelations to make,” the prosecutor said. Afterward, the prosecutor said, Lelandais apologized to the girl and her parents.

His lawyer Alain Jakubowicz described surprise at hearing Lelandais’ confession of Maelys’ “accidental death,” but did not give further details about what happened. The lawyer said he was dropping his request for Lelandais’ release.

“I’m a father. Nothing worse can happen to you as a parent,” he said, choking up.

Lelandais is also now suspected of killing a soldier months before in the same region.

Do you believe he "accidentally" killed her? Do you believe it was sexually motivated? Do you think he could be responsible for the Annecy murders?

I notice from the other thread that it crossed their minds he may have had something to do with the Annecy killings (Saad al-Hilli, his wife, her mother, and a cyclist), a case I followed intensely from the get-go, at least until it seemed as if there was a dead end.

How do you accidentally kill a girl, then hide her body, then go back to a wedding?

If you accidentally kill someone, you either call the cops or at least tell your friends/family immediately.

The moment you immediately go back to what you were doing I think we can knock accident off the list.

You got that right, you'd think that would be a no brainer!

Don´t forget he had his mobile phone set on flight mode, too, making sure he could not be tracked.

I'm pretty sure that my phone keeps some record of my location, even when it's on airplane mode. My Google Maps Timeline has a pretty good representation of where I went in Italy even though I had airplane mode on pretty much the whole time.

teedeepee•

It does. The GPS is a passive chip that keeps receiving satellite data even in flight mode. You can check in Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Settings > Significant Locations. If it’s on, your iOS device keeps tracking your movements, even in flight mode, and makes those locations available again as needed when you exit flight mode. Only way to avoid that is to switch off the phone entirely.

My GPS works on airplane mode.

Mine sort of worked while I was in Amsterdam, I had the phone on Airplane mode but I could see where I was on Google Maps whenever I opened it which was helpful in finding some places without stopping for Wifi.

... fuck. I do this when I'm not using my phone. Never thought it could be seen as suspicious.

Flight mode or off. I hate phones.

Then why do you have one

There was a thread on this 11 days ago, if you wish to read the comments on it, it's here :) Normally I'd wonder about a sexual motive with any murder, but in this case I'm just not convinced, because of the extreme differences between the two known victims. I wonder if he is more of an opportunistic thrill killer. I don't for a second believe her death was anything but deliberate.

Thanks. When I searched I used her name and I guess it just didn't match up well enough to the special characters used in her name in the title and otherwise, her name didn't seem to be mentioned or specified. It's an interesting thread though, I'm still reading through comments.

a little flippant but he reminds me of Patrick Bateman from American Psycho.

He'd be extremely unlucky if this girl "accidentally" died on him so close in time to him killing some other guy. How suspicious yet totally innocent!

peachdoxie•

For clarification, he was suspected in the death of Estelle but cleared, but has now been charged with the murder of Maeyls?

15
formyjeeOP•

I just realized I had my facts completely mixed up. My brain was not registering that the reddit post I linked (through search here for any posts about Maelys) was mainly about Estelle and not Maelys, though Maelys was also brought up in the op. It was Estelle's disappearance he was cleared of, and Maelys that he's now admitted to having killed.

My apologies. I have no excuse except that I was being absent minded. Thank you for helping me clear the clutter.

11
peachdoxie•

No problem. Thanks for the clarification!

You're correct, he was a person of interest in the Estelle case (he was called out by Estelle's parents mostly because of the similarities with the Maelys case) but has later been cleared because of a lack of evidence.

He was suspected in the Maelys case and recently confessed to killing her and showed the police where he took the body.

8
formyjeeOP•

Not sure who Estelle is but it was Maelys De Araujo that he was a suspect in the disappearance of, then cleared, and it is the same girl, Maelys De Araujo, that he finally confessed to (supposedly/allegedly) "accidentally" killing and disposing of her body, after they found traces of Maelys De Araujo's blood in the boot (ie trunk) of his car and confronted him about it.

seraphin22•

Estelle is the girl who went missing on her way home from school.

6
formyjeeOP•

Ok, I kind of recall reading he was a suspect in other disappearances but other than the soldier and the Al-Hilli's I didn't note any other persons they might have mentioned. I put Nordahl Lelandais Estelle into a search and got result after result after result... in French. I added the word suspected but still the results were in French. I need an English result!

2
seraphin22•

It's written in the link you put in this post to the other post. Near the top of what you wrote.

2
seraphin22•

Estelle is the girl he killed.

It seems crazy to link him to the Annecy murders to me. That's a mass killing of an entire family and a random bystander (or the other way around, depending on who you think the real target was) and Maelys seems like an opportunistic kidnapping. It would make more sense to link Maelys to the Estelle Mouzin kidnapping just going by victim type and M.O.

I think that Maelys's death was intentional, not accidental, and that it was sexually motivated. A lot of people will confess to "accidental" death, or even murder, before they will confess to rape (especially child rape) because it's less shameful and carries a lighter punishment.

I would be really stunned if this guy had anything to do with the Chevaline killings.

I agree, it's not linked in any way. Nordahl is just a no brainer from a small village in France who can not be linked to something this big. I've never understood why they get to talk about this mass murder in the first place...

PoppyHatesTea•

I totally forgot about the British family who were murdered in France. It was all over the news for ages here due to how strange it was. If I remember correctly, they questioned the man's brother to ask if he sent someone to execute his brother and family over business/money but I don't think he was arrested. It is interesting to see this man linked to that investigation since many people have forgotten about the case.

12
formyjeeOP•

Yes, the brothers had issues over the properties their deceased father left them and it made you wonder.

You know, I still wonder about Saad-Al Hilli's mother-in-law's (Suhaila-al-Allaf, who was shot and killed in the car that day too) ex-husband who suddenly died on the same day in the United States? I'm really rusty on that one and would have to look it up again and refresh myself but all of it had quite the air of intrigue at the time.

5
PoppyHatesTea•

I'm going to look it up later today (when I'm not super tired and can't sleep) the cyclist must of been so scared to potentially seeing an execution play out and then get murdered himself for being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

I don't think he accidentally killed her, in my opinion it was an opportunity murder. He saw her at the wedding, figured no one would notice right away and just went with it.

As for the Annecy shootings, I really don't think he had anything to do with it. The police think he's the mastermind behind numerous crimes because he was around the area at the time. I agree that he probably killed more people but I think he's an opportunity killer and, as someone mentioned it below, does it for the thrill. To me the Annecy murders are different. There were multiple people, and the cyclist was shot seven times. The guy didn't make sure that the two kids were dead. I might be wrong but it seems way more motivated and violent.

The way I see it is it was a hate crime. I remember at the time a lot of people seemed to think it was. He killed the parents, shot the kids but didn't take the time to make sure they were dead (or felt remorse and left). The cyclist passes by at the wrong place at the wrong time, the murderer sees him and shoots him too to make sure there's no witness. We'll probably never know what really went down but that's my theory.

What's interesting about the Annecy shooting its that there was another murder just a year before. Just as senseless as this one. It was a young Belgian tourist on vacation with his children. He had been driving during day, on his way back home with his children. He decided to make a stop at a rest area, to go to the bathroom or he planned to stay there for the night, I don't know.

But he was shot point blank in the bathroom. Some people linked the Annecy shooting wit this case even before the Lelandais angle, I guess because the two shootings seemed so random, and not far way (It is like a 5 hour drive between the 2 places.)

I think these two incidents could be linked (this murder is yet unsolved). I don't know if it was Lelandais or not, of course. The name of the victim was Xavier Baligant, maybe you've heard of this case. There's a fairly recent article from 2017 talking about a possible DNA lead, maybe something has come out if it (I think you speak french, you can do some research if you like).

7
94sleuth•

I heard about Xavier Baligant yes, I remember avout the DNA thing last year but I don't think they made much progress with that? I haven't heard about it since like July. I don't know if his murder is related to the Annecy shootings but there sure are a lot happening in the area. IIRC in 2014 (or late 2013 I can't remember) a woman was shot dead in front of her husband who I think was beaten by two guys who broke into their house for no apparent reason. At the time people seemed to think there was a connection between this and the Annecy shooting but I don't know.

yasmine_v•

Wow, I did not know about this other incident. Curious.

I bet it was a situation where only he, as a complete sociopath, would frame it as an accident. Maybe he tried to do something she was uncomfortable with, there was a struggle and he hit her head against something to silence/subdue her. In his sick mind it was an accident but no one else would call it that.

7
ExxieEssex•

This is an interesting take. I think you could be right- he feels it was an accident since maybe there was a struggle? I think the reality is there is no way it was an accident in the normal sense of the word.

Was the girl on her way home from school, or was she at the wedding? How did he "accidentally" kill her? Did he run her over with his car??

5
formyjeeOP•

He was suspected in the disappearances of two different 9 year old girls at different times and locations. One 9 year old girl, Estelle, disappeared on her way home from school (assuming I got that right), and the other 9 year old girl, Maelys, disappeared from a wedding party that he also attended. Supposedly, he was letting children look at the dogs in his car. At some point Maelys must have been the only child around giving him opportunity.

It reminds me of a case I read where a child got nabbed from a parking lot while the parents were watching a little league baseball game. At first the child was just going to play with the other kids at their invitation but shortly after the children went back to the bleachers area and she lingered behind and was abducted and murdered.

Him trying to say it was an accident puts me in mind of Mark Bridger and April Jones. He said he "accidentally" killed her too. God only knows.

M0n5tr0•

His body count is now believed to be two. Don't think I believe this accident especially without an explanation of what the accident was
