DM couldn't make his mind if he wanted me to play or not.

I know, when a player tells a story about an "Evil DM" who was out to get him, things look weird. I, myself, always think that the guy is a tad paranoid, or just didn't got along with the DM or just a plain bad player, but hear me out first.

After years without playing I saw an old friend of mine at the movies and he said "Hey, you still play D&D? We should get everyone together and play again!" I've said "Yeah, sure..." believing it was just small talk between old friends, but i was wrong. Turns out he was still close to some of the guys from our youth and in a few months he managed to get another five to join us. I'm gonna use initials to identify ppl, so the group was my friend S, his brother F, his neighbor D, another friend of ours R, the DM's GF and the one that volunteered to be DM, M. We rolled our toons using the point/buy method on Pathfinder, so we did it all at our own houses and sent to the DM for verification. I knew I was overly invested the moment that my background had more than a single page, while everybody's where a paragraph at most. So i made my character all into a theme, he was a sorceror, so i picked only the spells that fit my theme and i would even roleplay them as more than just things to do damage/buff the party and it didn't take too long for me to realise how much i messed up. Thing is, since we drifted apart i played with different groups and with different styles and sets, so i was into a very narrative vibe, wanting to build a nice epic story above everything else. My friends on the other hand kept their playstyles and focused on dungeon crawling, strategy and combat. I'm not at all saying that one styles is better than the other, i'm just saying they're different and if you seek one you souldn't play the other, or you'll get frustrated. So we starte playing, and not long into the campaign I found myself pretty useless... my spells reflected my theme, and they weren't the most useful in a combat situation, they're useful only in rp, so there i followed them trying to make my best and taking everychance i had to change my spellbook so i could be more useful, and there's where the problems started.

So DM's GF and F both got combate roles, and they were maximizing they're toons, so pretty soon the damage output of the party skyrocketed wich made most battles either a breeze if they were the apropriate level or a chore if the DM tried to escalate things a bit, since the rest of the party would die too easy or not cause damage at all. In this scenario I chose to became a buffer kind of sorcerer. My spells were all focused on make the strong members of the party even stronger, and this kinda pissed the DM. He started to make house rules against the effects of my spells, limiting them or making them unusable and we all just rolled with it. Then i had my first real grievance with him... the only day i missed a game he took ALL my itens away. You may think "Well, serves you right, you can't abandon the party like that" and i would agree with you but it was the ONLY time it ever happened at all. The other guys always missed sessions and one of them even got some XP from a sidequest he did by himself while away, but i got penalized hard, because the group had pooled all their money to help me make a wand and it got stolen before i could use it once. So i talked to them, sat them down, since we were childhood friends, and explained about all the trouble i was having, that my style wasn't compatible with theirs, that i messed up my character and wasn't contributing... but they insisted on me staying. They said that we meeting every two weeks where nice, they liked me, my tendency to always want to roleplay and chat and do things while on character helped them do it too and made the game well balanced... so I stayed. And things got worse. Every plan i had the DM undermined, he treated me like shit, and everytime i said i was leaving he begged me to stay... people got rewarded magic itens and money and I never got anything. All the magic itens i had were spare from the others, all the money i had where gave by them too... and i always got stripped of everything by one reason or the other.

So i kept showing up, having fun chatting with my friends, DM's GF always cooked something i liked (she was very, very nice) but then came the one that really broke my heart. We got into a dungeon, as always, and EVERYTHING in there nullified my spells. There wasn't a story reason for this anti-magic-fortress either, it was just put there for me. I say that because as soon as the game endeded as inquired about that. "Dude... i think it was kinda mean to put that kind of dungeon with a sorcerer on the group." "Yeah, i know. I wanted to see how they would fare without you." So, yeah, DM guy was testing to see how the game would be without me... with me... his GF got really mad, and everyone even told him that was f'd up to do. So there i was, not itens, no money, no way to use my spells without him coming up with a new house rule, having him testing how would things be if i wasn't playing, but STILL everyone insisted that i show up because "friendship". And, of course, i still wen't every session. So there comes the day, we where down another anti-magic-dungeon and got to the last boss, a Lich. We rolled inittiative, Lich goes first, he delay his action, i cast a spell, he uses a free action counter spell, I tell him that wasn't allowed, he says it is, I shut up, next action he kills me with a spell. The battle run it's course, i tell him again there were no such thing as free action counter-spell... he looks into the books and says i'm right, says "Sorry." and shrugs it off... cleric tries to res me, i refuse and excuse myself from the table. People starts to get mad at me, i was giving up on them over nothing, i tell them everything DM has ever done to me but they, again, won't listen so i just leave. The epilogue of everything is: months later DM contact me, we make some small talk and he invites me to R's house so we could play some D&D5... i refuse, he insists, i bring up the past incident he says it wasn't going to happen again, S and R come up and talk to me i finally cave and go there. We all sit around the table, everyone says how happy they are that i'm back, we get our stuff he hands me down a character sheet and says "Update your sorcerer to lvl 18, we're finishing the campaign today". That session went smoothly, one of the best i've ever played, but WTF. It still bugs me to this day why he picked on me so much and why no one else besides seemed to be bothered (except for his GF). We still played D&D5 for like 1/2 years before i finally lost my temper with the DM (not game related) and lost contact with the whole group. Miss them still, but i'm really glad i haven't to put up with that sh*t ever again.
