On This Saddest Day
This is the 15th anniversary of the death of Mr. Rogers. On the day he died, I wrote the following. I've never written poetry before or since.
The puppets are carefully
returned to their racks.
Their colors have faded,
their eyes have gone flat.
Today was the ending
for one mortal man
Of a journey of love,
and of caring, and friends.
The sweaters and sneakers
are given away
To the family that mourns him
On this saddest day.
Trolley is laid in
a position of pride
In his friend's coffin,
just by his right side.
And that's just as well,
for yet one job remains;
To take him to Heaven
with a final "Ding-ding!"
The angels will clap
and even God will show favor
To a man that humbly asks
"Won't you please, be my neighbor?"
