On White
On White
No one thought to ask the laundry woman
how she felt about the red that had crept
across the white plane of the bed and stopped
just before the edge.
No one thought she’d care
how it had danced around the edges
of the one
hole
that cut through to the floor.
No one thought she was worth asking
or she’d have anything to offer.
After they were done with their tape
and precise measurements, meticulously picking
atoms out of the nappy shag....
After their voices faded
talking of the junky stiff
and how no one gave a shit anyway...
After the carpets were cleaned
the bed replaced and the reporters
moved on to other prey...
She stood;
the neon caressing her like he used to,
the carpet still smelling a little like smokes and blood,
the screams echoing just outside her ears,
his broken love holding for one more moment,
as she tried to say goodbye.
