Don't Tell Birds.
Don’t Tell Birds
Don’t tell birds that they exist in song.
White feathers, soaring wings are all that poets see.
Don’t tell birds that anything’s gone wrong.
No, I don’t think they could even sing along,
Or know they’re meant to symbolize everything that’s free.
So don’t tell birds that they exist in song.
Once the old tree branches stood for everything that’s strong.
And nothing could be more blue than the old black sea.
Don’t tell birds that anything’s gone wrong.
I’m not sure birds can even think for very long.
Not about a different bird made up of a note and key.
Don’t tell birds that they exist in song.
I don’t think that music is where those birds belong.
I’d rather see them flying or holed up in their tree.
Don’t tell birds that anything’s gone wrong.
If birds were all to disappear in one big ancient throng,
The ones written into poetry would somehow still be.
So don’t tell birds that they exist in song.
Don’t tell birds that anything’s gone wrong.
