ITT: I tell you about popular things taught in school most of Polish people know and believe
-
Battle of Grunwald 1410 was the biggest medieval battle in Europe
-
Battle of Vienna 1683 where Poland under Sobieski rulership saved the Europe from Ottoman Empire by the famous Hussary charge Polacks however know that Hussars were common cavalry formation in Europe, but theirs saw the most action and was the most sophisticated and cool one
-
Poland saved Europe from communism in Polish-Bolshevik War 1920 mostly during decisive battle of Warsaw
-
Poland has the first Constitution of 3 May 1791, therefore being a leader in a modern type of country (it fails due to russian intervention shortly after)
-
Poland saved the Britain by having the most succesful RAF divisions and the best "score" during the Battle of Britain. Its a common knowledge Poland was forgotten and wasnt even invited to London parade after the war
-
Polish people made epic defenses during Hitler's attack. Sometimes 40 soldiers held strong during for example Battle of Wizna or Westerplatte
-
Monte Casino was a place where Polish soldiers made epic efforts to capture final and heavy defended monastery during allied offensive on Italy and that Polish soldiers fought hard in many allied operations during WW2
-
Poland made a lot of contribution to solve the Enigma, nazi code machine
-
Many skilled and talented Polish people helped in the war of independance like Tadeusz Kościuszko. He became popular in Poland for his insurgency so his biography and what he did in USA is well known aswell...
-
Most of people believe that cities like Vilnus or Lvov were sadly and stupidly lost because they were a huge part of Polish history and it's sad they aren't within our borders anymore.
-
Poland was a powerful country around year 1600 but it failed by too many wars and aggresions towards the Commonwealth and nobility state gaining too much power and having irresponsible attidue
-
Napoleon was a hero to kick off enemies of Poland and polish people helped him with heroism but he kinda wasnt that thankful towards them... However still he was a positive figure
However there are still few things I'd like to list that maybe aren't as known but for sure known for some.
-
Well its a common belief in Poland that Allies abandoned Poland in 39 but some may know that intelligence reports about the attack and plans about future offensives were ignored and Poland made propositions to france between 36-39 to for example prevent remilitarization of the Rhineland or warned that 3rd Reich is breaking threaty of Versaile and something should be made (it was ignored as I mentioned because French politics were afraid to believe any bad signs)
-
Polish people however are aware about who helped them during 1920's war and during WW2 like Hungary, Romania and show friendly attidue towards these countries Also, during this period people know that USA president made a political helpful claim that newly formed Polish 2nd Republic should be indepedent and have an acces to the sea
-
However people are known to the fact that for example Battle of Varna was rather a poor example of leadership by Władysław III of Poland
-
Poland got falsely accused of failing the Operation Market Garden but modern historical researches are reversing this situation
-
The complicated nature of medieval and post-medieval states, marriages, connections etc. is often hard to describe and pretty tough so its details are actually not that known to ordinary people... For example Duchy of Pomerania isnt that known to an ordinary person
