Help ID an old game

Hey all. Hope this is an appropriate post for the sub. I'm trying to remember the name of an old 2D platform fighter where the player was the pilot of a mech that had different unlock-able components (L/R arms, legs, chasis, and body). There were also medallions that could acquire levels and could be activated during combat to have some effect. I think you also had a side-kick? The game came in two different editions (think ruby vs sapphire in pokemon). I believe that one edition was gold and the other silver. The player selected different locations on an overworld map to enter a tournament or fight individuals from the selected area.

I can't really remember much else but would appreciate it if anyone knows the game.
