Help with amigurimi pattern :/

With pink, 8 sc in magic circle (8) Row 1: sc in each sc around (16)

These are the first two lines of directions to make Exeggute. This has to be a mistake, right? Because how could you do a single stitch and wind up with double the number of the previous row? So should I do a double stitch to make the numbers match, or are the numbers wrong?
