Is D&D being ruined because it’s becoming “mainstream”?

I’m curious on opinions on this topic. A lot of times I get that D&D, anime etc. is being ruined because it’s becoming more mainstream and popular. Like I see people saying if they meet a mean person at DNd event, etc. it’s because it’s become mainstream? What are your thoughts? Is it a real thing? Can a large amount of popularity hurt DNd?????
