Is there a trick to auto-run on console (xbone)?

I feel like it's 50-50 for me, it either works as expected or I can double click left stick a thousand times and can't get it to stick.

Is there a method to getting it to work every time? I've tried while walking and while running w/ the same results. Fast clicks, slow clicks, successfully auto-running is super random for me.
