36k Budget, what should I buy?

I'm a college student who attends school in the midwest but I am from new jersey. I am looking for a car. I like to drive and want a smooth enjoyable ride.
Things I want most are: Reliable in winter conditions, a modern interior, and preferably something a bit more luxurious. I've been looking into the c300 and the a4 but am not shying away from a Japanese car, I just believe that a german car suits my needs and style a bit more. Thanks
