ASUS A52JB laptop CPU support

Open

I have this old laptop, the ASUS A52JB and I absolutely love the keyboard on this thing. Lately, however, the old thing is getting kind of sluggish. I was thinking about "refreshing" it with more RAM, a better CPU, an SSD and a fresh Windows install (maybe try dual booting Linux, not exactly sure yet).

Do you think it would support a better CPU, more specifically any of the dual-core i7s (the i7-620M or the i7-640M)? I know, there are quad-core i7s for this socket (G1 / rPGA988A), but those are really expensive and I'm not confident the cooling system could handle those anyway.

Currently I have an i3-350M in the laptop and the ASUS website for the A52JB lists support for up to i5-540M. I believe the ASUS K52J also has the same motherboard.

P.S: Here's a little bonus story about this laptop and its current RAM configuration (2x2GB of some Samsung sticks). It originally came from the factory with 2x2GB memory from ADATA. It has been randomly BSoD-ing on me for as long as I can remeber. Turns out, it had like 15 Errors in MemTest. A few months ago I found an old Acer laptop just sitting in the trash. Took it home, completely stipped it down to its last screw (tested it first obviously, it turned on, but no video, probably a dead GPU). I kept the CPU (Athlon II P340, nothing spectacular), the DVD drive and the screen. Also wanted to keep the HDD, but that was very much destroyed. But, it turned out, the RAM in the thing was completely intact, 0 Errors even after 2 hours of MemTest. So I obviously replaced my current kit with this one and had 0 BSoDs since :)
