Why is the reference for a sentence it's truth value for Frege?

I understand that this is understood as a weak point for Frege, and I wish to write an essay attacking this notion.

Outside of it's initial oddness, I need to better understand the mechanics of why this is the case in freges philosphy so I can throw more objections toward it.
