Does anyone know how to do the quick rope jumps in DKC/DKC2/DKC3?

Asking here only because I cannot for the life of me find a tutorial or speedrunner who explains how they're doing this. If you've never seen this in Donkey Kong Country before here are a couple videos(directlinked right to the proper times to see the technique)

It almost looks like the person jumps off the rope, grabs above it, then quickly changes their position on the rope left-right-left and jumps again. But I cannot for the life of me replicate that rope jumping at all.

Anyone able to do this in any of the DKC games? What am I doing wrong when practicing this?
