Opinion: the next Smash Bros will appeal more to competitive players and be more like Melee.

Smash Switch

I think I have a few solid reasons for thinking this so bear with me.

1. The tone of the reveal trailer

Many have pointed this out, but it's unlike any Smash trailer we've ever seen and is completely different from the Smash 4 reveal trailer. This one has a much more bright and colorful aesthetic and seems to be aimed at kids. Starting in an Animal Crossing town also contributes to this. Splatoon is also a family-friendly series but the way the inklings are confronted by the denizens of the "Smash Dimension", like Mario who looks like a hardened Italian badass all of a sudden, is totally rad and way more "mature" than any other trailer from the series. Even the Brawl reveal trailer, an entry in the series with a more gritty art-style than the rest and an "epic" feel, feels more like a cool shonen anime or something than the "shit just got fucking real" vibe of the Smash 5 teaser. Using a more mature tone for the trailer could the game wanting to draw in a more hardcore crowd, maybe even the FGC lads. This won't alienate the kiddos either since they'll be all over cool, mature looking stuff too and we'll still have our E 10+ rating at the end of the day.

2. The logo animation

The animation used in the new trailer which has the letters fly into place is an obvious callback to the logo animation in the melee reveal trailer/opening. They both have the letters kinda "stretch" into place (you guys know what I mean). This might not mean anything, but they could've made that callback to indicate "what kind of Smash bros game" this will be.

3. My biggest reason: Smash 4's online modes

Smash 4 was the first in the series to have a legitimate online multiplayer component. As you all know the modes were split into two categories: "For Fun" and "For Glory". Nintendo of course will have detailed statistics on what modes are being played the most, etc. In this day and age of online gaming and patches they might have more player statistics than ever before about the modes/settings players use for local multiplayer as well. What if the folks at Nintendo looked and the stats and said "Well damn, 90% of online players just pick For Glory 1v1". Now that they are more aware of how people actually play these games, they adjust accordingly. Because that's what companies do; they do research and make changes to suit their consumers. Saying that most players play For Glory is just speculation on my part, but it's based on personal experience. Every friend I know who was active on Smash 4 pretty much exclusively played For Glory. I've also met plenty of young people, the demographic that should be the intended audience of For Fun, who also prefer For Glory with no items and no stage hazards. Kids these days are doing crazy shit in Fortnite and obliterating people twice their age in Call of Duty. It's only natural to assume that they'd go for the more competitive option.

In conclusion, I think Nintendo is realizing that the thirst for competitive multiplayer games with a high skill ceiling in today's market has even seeped into the Smash fanbase and this has affected the development of Smash Bros for Switch in turn.
