Student housing for graduate students?

I'm going to be attending Leiden University this fall for my MSc (I'm 26), and I know of so many horror stories from other universities about housing for grad students, that I thought it was worth asking if anyone can attest to the quality of the student-housing. I've got a pretty flexible budget, so I afford housing elsewhere, but I don't know just how impossible that'd be as an American without an existing resident permit.

I'd love to hear anyone experience with the system, and what you think was good, bad, or just different.

Cheers!
