[standard] Thoughts on RG monsters potential changes and standing in the current meta.

Standard

Hey everyone,

So I’ve been thinking about the Meta as it stands now, and debating if I want to keep playing my RG Monsters deck. I’m currently on the same build that one GP Memphis, but I’m seriously considering changing some SB slots, or changing decks altogether.

It seems like the Meta is mainly dominated by Grixis or UB Midrange or control. Mono Red and various go wide aggro strategies, like GW tokens, Mono-W, etc.

I’ve also noticed that RG monsters has fallen significantly in the Meta breakdown on MTGGoldfish, I’m not sure if that indicates it’s not as good as it was due to meta changes, or it’s just not being played or top 8’ing as much. I did well with RG monsters at FNM and did decent at a PPTQ (lost the last round due to game loss for accidentally submitting a 59 card deck)

I believe I have a good feel for the how the deck should work, but I’m definitely no expert. Here’s what I think in regards to the pros and cons.

Pros: Very resilient and can keep swinging later into the game, great at exhausting single-target removal (thanks to Khenra’s and Phoenix). It has decent card advantage with the Branch-walkers and Jadelight rangers. Cons: Feels weak vs “go-wide” strategies and indestructible creatures like Hazoret.

I feel like the “Go-wide” strategy could be stopped by changing the sideboard to include cards like Sweltering suns and maybe Hazoret could be stopped by Hour of Devastation or by splashing black or white for exile cards.

What does everything think? Should I try another deck or make adjustments to RG monsters?
