How to pay for a mission?

My wife and I have a 16 year old son. He has a few years to prepare. We're starting to worry about paying for his mission. We make decent money but we have astronomical amounts of student debt and credit card debt so we're basically living paycheck to paycheck.

I don't know the current cost of a mission or what alternatives there may be for those who can't afford to pay.
