What does r/EMS think about NREMT re-certification by exam?

Just curious as to the amount of providers around here who re-cert by challenging the exam. I did it for the last time today, as my state has changed their licensure requirements, but this has been my go-to for quite a while.

In my opinion, the test drags me back to the books and puts the fear back into me. I'm motivated to study and refresh the methods of the NREMT. Admittedly though, there is a lot of value in the traditional model.

Thoughts?
