How long until everything man-made in orbit falls back to earth?

Assuming something causes humans to stop sending up satellites and we're unable to correct the orbits of anything currently up there, how long would it take for the orbits to decay and fall back to earth? Is there anything in orbit that would last so long as to be basically considered permanent ie thousands of years?
