Civil servant with student loan debt trying to buy a car.

Auto

I owe about $125,000 in student loan debt, however based on my income and my new job as a public school teacher, I recently spoke with my student loan provider and they told me I would be paying around $170 a month for ten years and then the rest would be forgiven. I put in the paperwork to get the ball rolling on that but they told me it will take around 30 days to process.

About two weeks later, my crappy car I’ve been driving for the past 15 years totally gave out. I called my bank to ask about getting approved for a car loan. They called me back about two hours later and told me I could not get approved for any amount due to not making enough money vs my financial responsibilities.

My rent is 750 a month and I make 50k a year and have no other debt. No credit cards, nothing. My credit is garbage though. (I think around 560 last I checked).

Once the civil servant loan forgiveness thing gets sorted out, will things change or am I going to have to ride the bus for ten years when the debt is forgiven?

EDIT: My boyfriend (not married but we’ve had a child together and have lived together for ten years) is pre-approved for one but he still has 10 months left to pay off his own car. Will it hurt him to have two car loans out at the same time for 10 months. I’ll obviously be making the payments.
