Maintenance Paranoia Question
Hey r/subaru!
Yesterday I gave my 2005 Saabaru Aero an oil change, and I screwed up a little by adding the entire 4.73 liter container instead of the 4 liters the car typically takes. I was in a rush to get on the road and Googled around to decide if it was worth worrying about, and decided not to drain the excess oil prior to a 160 mile drive.
After my drive I let the car cool overnight and checked the dipstick in the morning, to discover the oil line well above the full mark. At this point I decide to take some oil out just for the peace of mind, and open the filler cap to stick a length of surgical tubing to suck some oil out. I immediately notice white residue on my filler cap that I had not noticed the day prior, and panic a little. I then stick the surgical tubing down the filler cap and it quickly becomes stuck, so I pull it out to find a thick brown sludge coating the end of the tube! There was no water/sludge on the dipstick but I am paranoid that I may have caused damage by driving the car with 0.73 liters of excess oil, and the sludge is a result of this damage.
So I ask you, car people; Is filling a 4 liter oil sump with 4.73 liters of oil asking for serious trouble? Is the sludge a symptom of damage that i caused? Did I screw up?
Thanks in advance for any replies.
