Brewing a Pseudo-Turbid Mash NE IPA
So I’ve been tasked with developing the recipe/process of developing our breweries first NE IPA. Our brewery is 6 years old, and our owner just agreed to make our first IPA last year, and it was such a huge success so now he’s agreed to do a NE IPA. (I’m a traditional brewer but super excited for the challenge).
We have a 15 bbl premier brewhouse, that is direct fire. I’ve read a lot about NE IPAs and have brewed a ton as a homebrewer, I’ve had the most successes with my haze when I added my flaked wheat/oats in for a few minutes at the start of the boil, so I was trying to think of a way to recreate this type of thing on our commercial system. I had this idea, but tell me what y’all think:
Essentially, I want to put the raw unmilled flakes oats in the grant tank, after I’m done mashing in, transfer the beer through the bed of wheat flakes before it hits the boil kettle. Thoughts? Is this ludicrous? Have y’all ever tried something like this? Is there an easier way I’ve neglected? Any brewing process improvements/suggestions would be helpful!
Cheers!
