Maverick 88 for a beginner/first time firearm owner?

Recently came into some family owned land in the desert. I'm looking to purchase a gun mostly for recreational shooting of cans out in the desert.

That being said it's pretty isolated out there so some home defense capability will be nice as well.

I'm looking for something that is affordable, somewhat versatile, & fun to shoot.

Research so far as me really looking into the maverick 88 was hoping to get some opinions from more experienced owners. thanks!
