Basecamp experience or alternative?

I work to assist businesses find areas to either increase productivity or decrease costs. One of their struggles is lack of communication between multiple departments that are all working on the same project, updates, track of work, etc. Anyone have any experience using Basecamp as a solution? If not, any other recommendations that you've personally used that has help improve your workflow and job environment?
