Map advice needed

Hey guys! Im wanting to do some map creation for a game Im starting in a couple months and would love to hear what software you guys use. I've seen some pretty incredible map art and would love to give it a shot. The game revolves around a small late 80s rustic ski resort town in New England. I'll post pictures that Im drawing inspiration from for reference. Again, all tips and tricks are welcome and appreciated.
