Instead of RE, switching locations?

My SO and I were talking the other day and have determined that when we hit our FIRE number with house paid off, we want to leave where we live currently and go rent in a few interesting places with potentially HCOL. Since we won't need to save as much, we can spend more on housing and such. The idea is that we could go live in Hawaii, San Diego, Portland, etc. for 3-5 year stints. We don't have kids and the money we saved can keep growing as long as we make enough to live off of from whatever jobs we have. We'd just rent the house out until we're ready to come back, or sell it if we decide we don't want to.

Has anyone done something like this? I'm curious how it went and if there is anything we should think about up front.
