Help request - Removing paint from a wood ceiling.

Hello DIYers! I purchased my first home and as you can see here:

the previous occupants we're terrible painters. This is a pic of the ceiling. I want to keep the wood ceiling unpainted. I researched online and found advice suggesting rubbing alcohol to remove the paint where the rollers hit. Another post talked about sandpaper. I wanted to ask you fine DIYers what you think?
