My struggle of making non-furry friends
So I've been trying to make some closer friends at school but it almost never really gets anywhere when we talk. When you start to get to know someone, you tell them your hobbies and how you spend your time. And while I don't think that my life is consumed by the furry fandom, it is definitely a big part of my life and a huge hobby of mine.
Say instead of being a furry I was a florist. I'd tell my new friend that I was a florist and they would think that's neat and be accepting. They might be interested to see floral arrangements I've made and even talk about flowers, even if they know nothing about flowers. If we became closer I would be more invested in their hobbies and they'd surely appreciate mine more.
But when I tell people I'm a furry, 99% of the time they are either confused or have the wrong idea of what being a furry is. It usually ends up as a "alright then" kind of thing and our friendship then depends on other things we have in common, because at least in my experience it is rather hard to find a non-furry curious about the hobby in a significant way. If they aren't scared away by my being a furry, we never end up great friends anyway.
My big hobbies are that I draw and play video games, and the majority of what I draw is furry-related. So that really just leaves video games, which gives me gamer friends, but not much else.
While I feel like I can bond with others over things like my beliefs and philosophies and whatnot, while that makes for great conversation, still does not really leave any activities for me and the friend to "do" while we hang out.
I've never really had other large hobbies other than drawing and video games. I am really curious to know what the hobbies are of people who manage to keep very close friends who also have different hobbies from them. My assumption is those hobbies are about the opposite of what furry as a hobby is--common and easily likable. Are there any particular hobbies I can undergo that would give me a better chance at meeting closer friends? I'd really like to grow as a person, try new things, and meet people who do things more differently than I do for once.
Thanks in advance everyone, sorry about the wall. I also apologize if anything is written weirdly because I just banged this out while waiting for class to start in a little bit.
