(Windows 7) Device Manager is completely blank, and new devices connected by USB are not recognized. I suspect this was caused by a Windows Update.

After a Windows update failed installation during restart, my computer went into a restart-failure-restart loop until eventually, it gave up and started up normally.

The update in question:

2018-01 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4056894)

Installation date: ‎1/‎12/‎2018 4:54 PM

Installation status: Failed

Error details: Code 80004005

Update type: Important

I also suspect that this other failed update might be the cause, if not the first one:

Logitech - Other hardware - Logitech USB Input Device

Installation date: ‎1/‎6/‎2018 8:22 AM

Installation status: Failed

Error details: Code 80246007

Update type: Recommended

Logitech Other hardware software update released in September, 2016

Since this happened, my Device Manager has been completely blank.

Restarting multiple times yielded no changes and I've tried all methods of fixing the issue from this post on TheWindowsClub: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/device-manager-empty-not-showing-anything-windows

I've tried enabling 'Plug and Play', re-registering DLL files, and also editing the registry. Nothing changed.

I suspect that one of these two updates is the cause. Any device that doesn't have drivers installed are not recognized (which I assume is why my wireless mouse and usb wired game controller still work) but when I connect my iPhone 5s with the Lightning to USB cable, Windows doesn't recognize it at all. Interestingly enough, when I have iTunes open, that program recognizes it perfectly fine. As far as Windows is concerned, it looks like I haven't plugged it in at all.

System Restore isn't an option, because my computer didn't have any space allocated for storing Restore Points. I don't know why this was the case, but I'm learning about all of this as I try to fix this issue.

I'm at the end of my rope here. Any help is appreciated.

Version of Windows is Windows 7 Home Premium.
