Career Advice [web dev]
Hello careeradvice,
Posting for my buddy Steve:
Steve's gotten his first full time job as a QA analyst @ 55k annually, little to no benefits AFAIK.
He works from about 9:30 to 7 errday and get's no overtime. Sometimes later. He's been at this job for a lil over a month and it's literally driving him insane (like, dood is furious about the job even on his off hours).
Steve's normally a chill guy, so I'm a bit worried for him.
He doesn't have much savings and is planning on quitting this week or so was just let go.
He has a degree in Electrical Engineering from NYU, completed full stack web dev course at General Assembly, and otherwise hasn't work full time.
He's a minority with a common ethnic name and doesn't seem to get much responses from applications.
I'm guessing there's some racial bias at play but not sure if and how much.
He has a portfolio site with a few projects and is interested in doing full stack dev.
He's gone to meetups but networking doesn't seem to work out for him. He's been applying to about 25 jobs/wk before he was working, does cover letters, revised his resume, talked to career coach at GA, still not getting many interviews, even phone screens.
Any advice on what he might be doing wrong?
TLDR - NYC-based full stack web dev LF junior/entry dev role but having trouble important notes
- minority
- male
- ethnic name
- US citizen
