33 M considering career change - Firefighter/EMT. Need advice, and I'm wondering about my chances.

about me:

33 year old male.

5'8" 160 lbs

Graduated college with a BA in Psychology

No criminal record.

My current occupation is working with special needs children (kindergarten to highschool, which could be up to age 22) and already requires a background check.

Physically fit. Good eyesight.

I do happen to know a local fire captain whom I met at jiujutsu practice, which I go to 5+ times a week. I don't know him particularly well, but we did exchange numbers. Part of me is afraid to text/call so I'm running things by this subreddit first.
