NJ FamilyCare terminated - appeals process? Alternatives for health care?

Hello r/newjersey

I have comorbid ADHD/Bipolar Disorder and have been severely depressed since December; my mood has improved slightly in the past few days.

Unfortunately, I did not realize my deadline for NJ FamilyCare eligibility was March 10th (for some reason I wrote down March 31).

I received a letter yesterday notifying me that my eligibility will be terminated effective March 31. According to the letter, I have the right to appeal through a hearing, and I am allowed legal representation through the Legal Services of New Jersey-Health Care Access Project.

Has anybody gone through this process, and if so, what can I expect?

Alternatively, are there any other options I could try to get health coverage?

Thank you so much.

Additional information:

  • I am currently employed at a startup company as a contractor, so I have no coverage through my employer
  • My experience in the year I've been back in NJ (was previously in NYC) with Medicaid practitioners has been horrible in my area, so if there's any way to obtain health coverage for which I have to pay, I would gladly seek that option if it means potentially better doctors
  • I am running very low on some of my medications, so I would need to get this resolved ASAP
  • I wrongly assumed that the renewal process could be done quickly over the internet, as it was in New York; the fact that it's still done over mail in this day and age is very frustrating

Edit:

TBQH I don't even know if I want to stay on Medicaid. If there exists a feasible and affordable alternative for healthcare, I can afford to pay a little money if it means the potential of better quality of care.

Ever since I started on NJ FamilyCare last year, I've never met so many incompetent providers and practices in my life. This is obviously highly anecdotal and (I'm hoping) unusual, and likely due to: the relatively rural area in which I live; the relevant medical specialties; and a number of smaller issues on my part. Thankfully, I found an excellent GP (although the practice is very poorly managed).

Also of note: I have experience working in healthcare, hence the harsh criticism towards the professionals I've encountered.
