Father is having a Meltdown

My dad is in the middle of a meltdown. Just yelling and throwing things and amped up energy. Its been a looooong time since he's been this bad. He's had anger and a short temper all my years of being raised by him, but whats going on right now is almost as I've never seen him before. I think he broke the TV by throwing something at it.

Just for reference, if he was to hit my mom should I call the police or what is the advice there? Call the police or try to avoid that for the sake of not sending him to jail over a bad day. He also thinks therapy is a joke and scam and probably would never take anti depressants, but is in heavy need of help.
