Mixing Toms for Metal

I have been a recording hobbiest for a few years but I am super novice and I am having troubles with toms. Since I am not a drummer, I use superior drummer 2 for drums.

I have tried many different techniques on here and other websites and nothing seems to get the punch that I am looking for.

I have a track (which I can provide for reference) where I use the default NY Avatar kit. I have boosted lows (I tried different frequencies all around 80-110 depending on rack or floor toms), cut some muddy mids, boosted the highs slightly for the initial stick “thwack” and even tried light and heavy compression. All I end up with is either crazy boomy bass or thin (the highs kinda pop but the lows are missing).

Additionally, I noticed that the toms themselves have a very long decay which I think adds to the muddiness but if I gate them, it loses some of the punch. I am not used to using gates on toms so this is likely my ignorance.

I have the toms soloed with no to little bleed. I will admit the room mic is mostly off because it picks up all the other drums too. But that could be part of the issue too.

What am I doing wrong? Are there any other techniques I can try or ways to help have the toms pop with a good thick sound without obviously bleeding too far into the mud or bass?
