Can bacteria eat plastic?

I read somewhere that millions of years ago trees just littered the landscape until some bacteria evolved to eat it and therefore allowed it to rot. Is it possible to develop a bacterium to do this with plastic? Is anyone trying this as a way to solve the environment issues?
