Upgrade from droid maxx

I've had my Droid Maxx for about 5 years, and it's been great. I love the form factor, battery life (at least when it was new), and the fact that it's lasted this long. Unfortunately, it's starting to die. Apps take forever to load, typing doesn't always work, screen freezes occasionally, etc. It's time to upgrade.

I'm struggling to find modern options that have the same small size and battery life. The Sony Xperia XZ1 looks good, but won't work on Verizon. Any other suggestions?
