Steam into Original?

So..I've been wanting to start playing this game recently, and with the sale going on at 50% off well, it's well worth it now. The question is...

Since I've downloaded the client through Steam, can I just buy the game through the original website, and just sign up use the code there and well.. you understand right? (Sorry if this seems repetitive but I haven't found any posts like this before)
