FYI: Orbotron USB adapters for SpaceOrb 360 are in stock
Warning: For controller nerds only!
A few of us have experimented with "3d mice" (6 degrees of freedom controllers) in space games. (See the modern SpaceMouse here: https://www.3dconnexion.com/products/spacemouse.html )
For those of us who are SUPER hardcore, we've dug up the old SpaceOrb 360 from the grave and used a serial-to-USB adapter to resurrect it. It doesn't have enough buttons, and it's not as good at aiming as a mouse, but it IS cool, and there's no better way to land a ship!
So the one guy who makes adapters just started making them again. If you're into cool old controllers and painful software configuration with limited results, have at it!
And of course, a crafty person could rip one apart and build it into a custom battlestation chair specifically as a precision landing controller. But that's beyond me.
("Why are you posting this in the Star Citizen subreddit?" Because this is the only space game I play!)
