MIL and the dinner time racism
This is by far my colleagues favorite story and the best instance of my husband using his shiny spine.
Background: My husband is the oldest child and has two brothers. Middle brother (MB) is happily married to a bossy, but otherwise super nice woman. At the time youngest brother (YB) had just gotten a new girlfriend.
The majority of YB’s girlfriends were brainless bimbos, so when he came home to introduce us to the new one we didn’t have high hopes. It turned out she was awesome (they broke up but we are still friends). She was getting a postgrad degree, had no baggage, was witty and had a good sense of humour. She was also super good looking (not in a bimbo way). Everyone loved her except the MIL (aka. Potbellied pig).
MIL was pissed that new GF was from a different ‘cultural background’ than the rest of the family. That’s how she voiced it, but we all knew she didn’t like the fact that the girl was not of European decent (If you haven't picked up on it. MIL is super racist).
One day after they had been dating for a couple of months, MIL invited us all over for a dinner at her place. Most of the family couldn’t make it and it ended up being just me, hubby and MIL and FIL. She took this opportunity to badmouth the GF, again stating that they shouldn’t be together because of their different ‘cultural backgounds’ etc.
Finally having enough of this I asked her why the hell she was so focused on GF's ‘Cultural background’. I mean none of us cared. She was awesome. MIL then throws a fit and starts loudly proclaiming that she is just thinking about them. She starts screeching about how our culture is important and how it’s a doomed relationship cause our cultures can’t mix. She doesn’t want him to convert. He’ll end up unhappy blah blah blah.
I point out that people from different cultures can make it work. GF is the same religion as her and YB and that our cultures are similar and even overlap in some beliefs. There’s no reason why their different 'backgrounds' should be an issue.
Obviously I struck a nerve. She literally screams at me “But what about the children?! What will they look like?”
At this point I was so shocked I yell back: “Who gives a f**k?!” (They had literally known each other for a few months. So no kids on the horizon.)
She turns to my husband and gives him the ‘can-you-believe-she-said-that-to-me-stare’. He calmly looks at her and said the following: “They’ll be dark white and light black. So they’ll fit in everywhere!”
Me and FIL both snorted and laughed. She was enraged beyond words and didn’t speak to me for the rest of the dinner. I was super proud of hubby and after this we made it our personal mission to shield new GF from MIL's craziness and stupidity.
