My kids are playing the "poor people game" - should I worry?

Discussion

Hi, I am the father of two younglings. 6 & 4. They love role playing: "princess and knight", "superheroes", "teacher and student".

It is great. Requires minimum effort from my side.

However, they have started playing a new game. "The poor people game". They claimed to have invented the game on their own (can't blame the school).

The principle of the game is simple: they are poor. Sometime orphans.

I hear them moaning and begging for foods. Building shelters using pizza boxes. My son even reclaimed an old pair of socks with holes for his "poor people costume".

My first reaction was laughing (what else?) but I am now concerned about the wrong impression it might give - specially among our more left oriented friends.

My wife and I are trying to stir them away from that "game" (including buying new costumes). But they really love this one. To quote my daughter: "but being poor is a lot of fun".

Has anyone experienced something similar?

So far the best excuse we found when asked by another mum was "well it is better they are aware of the misery of others" - but it is a tad light...

Edit: problem is about how redirecting the play not about social status- please my progressive redditors friends
