Will a slightly-too-short chain increase drivetrain wear?
Last weekend I converted my hybrid commuter bike to a 1x11 drivetrain, with a 42t chainring and 11-42t cassette. It appears this combination of gear sizes and chainstay length needs a bigger chain than the 114-link one I bought - I think I'd need to buy a 116-link or 118-link* to get the perfect size.
However, having set up the rear derailleur, everything seems to shift fine. There's a slight clicking noise when on the largest sprocket, but it doesn't affect performance.
If this too-short chain increases chain wear, that's fine by me as I'll just keep riding it until it's prematurely worn, and replace it with a longer one. But if it's going to increase wear on any of the other shiny new components, I'll make replacing the chain a priority, as the chain's much cheaper than any of the other parts of the drivetrain.
Does anybody know if I'm likely to increase wear by running this chain?
(*depending on whether 'link' means 'full link' or 'half link')
