Plastic gas tank and no skid. Am I asking for trouble?

I'm in the process of adding armor to my Jeep. I made a TC skid myself, and I bought a front-end skid from Rusty's because they're only $120 plus shipping. Their gas tank skid, however, is $270 after shipping.

My '97 has a plastic gas tank and no skid plate.

I should get that fixed, right? Where do you recommend I buy one or can I make one? I have a stick welder
