Why doesn’t AMA work against Hymn of Light?

Hymn of Light’s effect activates in the graveyard: “if a ritual monster you control would be destroyed by battle or card effect while this card is in your graveyard, you can banish this card instead”.

AMA’s effect should prevent HoL from activating it’s effect, no? AMA: “for the rest of this turn after this card resolves, Spell/Trap Cards, and their effects, cannot be activated.”

HoL is clearly a spell card, and it’s effect activated despite AMA being played.

I checked ygo wikia and there are no card rulings for anti-magic arrows and all rulings associated with HoL are irrelevant to this situation.

I’m kinda pissed right now and I need to know if I actually should be pissed

Hymn of Light does not 'activate' when you use it from the graveyard.

Hymn of light is a continuous effect. It's always there and can protect your monster at a particular moment. AMA prevents activation of effects only.

It's actually an effect that doesn't fall under any classification.

Well yeah, that's true to be exact. But I've found it's easier to understand if you think of it as continuous. (Obviously it's not)

I call them substitute effects pretty much all of then work the same

so is SSA and it gets countered by ama

RazorOfSimplicityInto the Duel Links.•

SSA has Quick- and Trigger-like Effects, both of which require activations, which is why AMA stops them.

Hymn's GY effect doesn't have an activation process.

you do get asked if you want to banish the card or not though

i noticed that with cards like glad nerokius and gem-knight citrine, they both negate any kind of activation of cards/effects when they battle, but still, the opponent can always use some "protection from destruction" effect, like hymn of light, machine angel ritual, toon kingdom, relinkuriboh.

i don't know why that's exactly the case, but when it has to do with "avoiding battle destruction" at least, it can be activated. i haven't tested that with d-hero dreamer though, so i don't know if it would work as well, but following the line of thought, it should

Making a choice to use an effect doesn't have anything to do with whether the effect is being activated or not.

Why are people downvoting just because they do not know the rulings. Is not even that clear.

GPSDRIFTI activate a continuous pack purchase!•

It probably implicitly refers to spell and traps on the field.

-8
alienx33•

No it doesn't. For example - Skill successor can't activate in the grave if you AMA on your opponent's turn.

I see. This needs fixing then.

Nope it’s pretty okay the way it is.

Activate means to flip cards, right?

-12
PM_ME_HEADPATS•

"activate" means that cards that start a chain (face-up or not) will not be be able to trigger, good examples are Beast Rising and SSA, neither can be used after AMA.

Hymn of Light doesn't start a chain, this is the reason AMA doesn't work in this case

Does it? I thought activating was to “use” an effect, and it could happen in different ways. Like how Necrovalley negates effects that “activate” in the graveyard - the cards in the grave aren’t being flipped up, but their effects would otherwise be used - or activated

1
alienx33•

Necrovalley prevents HoL because it says cards in the grave cannot be banished. The card text for Necrovalley has become much more precise now to actually prevent almost any graveyard effect.

About activating, if a card banishes itself, it usually activates only when there's a semi-colon after the banish clause. That implies the card starts a chain and thus activates.

The usage of effects in this game can be divided into activations and non-activations. "Use" and "activate" aren't interchangeable in this game.
