Class Skills

Mad Enhancement: E-
The very True Name of this hero is receiving the influence of the word called Berserker. He has reason, and it is also possible to have a high-class conversation with him. He has a little amount of ferocity being left behind in him, and there is even no effect whatsoever to his parameters.

Personal Skills

Berserk: A
A composite Skill of the Bravery Skill and Mad Enhancement Skill, negating mental interference such as pressure, confusion and fascination, and increasing melee damage. Simultaneously, when using this Skill, he turns into a beast that fights with his instincts.

Instinct: B
The ability to always “feel” the most optimal development for oneself during combat.

By being summoned as a Berserker, he may slightly disregard his intuitions.

Battle Continuation: B
It is difficult for him to know when to give up, even to the very end. In particular, even after entering old age, he still had the guts to go strong, and he did not stop breathing until he killed a fire dragon.

Noble Phantasms

Hrunting: Hound of the Red Plains
Rank: A
Type: Anti-Unit
Range: 1
Maximum Number of Targets: 1 person

… A magical sword that can sniff out the smell of blood, it can launch the most optimal slash with a mere ordinary swing. Each time it lands a successful hit, the drawn blood will flow into the sword blade and it will shine in a red colour. There’s nothing flashy like an Anti-Army beam, but at any rate, it is a magical sword that can overbearingly decide the match when it is also coupled with his physical strength as a Berserker.

Naegling: Iron Hammer Snake Smash
Rank: B
Type: Anti-Unit
Range: 1
Maximum Number of Targets: 1 person

… A sword somewhat shorter than Hrunting. Rather than saying it is a sword, it is closer to a club made of steel, basically a sword serving the purpose of smashing up the target, and it is equivalent to having no cutting ability. Furthermore, there is a concern that it can be destroyed when it is used more than a certain number of times. However, at the moment of destruction, it can give a large amount of damage to the target.

Grendel Buster: Primal Conflict
Rank: A+
Type: Anti-Unit
Range: 1
Maximum Number of Targets: 1 person

A special Noble Phantasm that is banned from being used, but its ban can be lifted with the destruction of Hrunting and Naegling. The concept of bringing down Grendel becoming a Noble Phantasm. This Noble Phantasm temporarily restores the amazing physical strength he had during his lifetime, before crushing the target from right in front of them by throwing, kicking and punching them. In addition, since this attack is the same primitive form of weaponry (one’s own limbs) that has been unchanged since the primeval times, it negates Noble Phantasms and Skills with the characteristic of “grasping and perceiving every attack after seeing them used once.”

First Pronoun: ore
Second Pronoun: temee / omae / kisama, etc.
Third Pronoun: aitsu / are, etc.

Personality

As a king, Beowulf governed over his people well, but his current stance is fundamentally closer to a terrorist’s. At this time, he understands that there is a coin where creation and destruction are but two sides of that coin, and he recites that from the aftermath of destruction surely comes the stepping stone for creation.

He is a capable person that might be generally unfit for kingship, and Beowulf himself even generally shares that sentiment. His longing for destruction being greater than any other king, and his savagery which allowed him to accomplish even dragon slaying, did not change in the end even as he further grew old. However, he is kind to the people and to females, to those that are weak.

##Motivation/Attitude towards the Master

Beowulf basically comes across the Master as an equal or as a partner with a slightly lower rank than them. There may be a time where he listens to their opinions, and there may be a time where he doesn’t listen to them. However, given that it is hard to say he is an intellectual one, he would comparatively be ready to jump onto reckless gambles, risking his life to accomplish the mission assigned to him. He has no desire for the Holy Grail. Nevertheless, he has the spirit to respond to his Master with all his power, seeing that he is being depended upon.

Dialogue Examples

“Servant, Berserker. I responded to your summons… What kind of face is that. Is it strange if a Berserker spoke?”
“What. These sharp-minded fellows are usually like heroes, yet they are no more than a lot that are messed up in the head too. My work is to punch the shittier bastards among them.”
“As you spend your life as a hero, you will definitely come across those guys. Despite being able to resolve the problems by themselves, those guys have a habit of finding it bothersome to think, clinging and saying “Help!” instead. So, I’ll reply with this… “Shut up. Do what must be done.””
“Kingship, it was generally an unsuitable job for me. I will not hold onto it again.”

Historical Character Image

Beowulf is the protagonist of “Beowulf”, said to be the oldest epic poem of English literature. The setting of the epic poem consists of the south side of modern Sweden to the vicinity of modern Denmark.

This tale is composed in two parts; part one is the story about Beowulf proceeding to exterminate the giant Grendel together with fifteen of his subordinates, while part two takes place fifty years later, depicting an aged Beowulf unfolding a mortal combat with a fire-breathing dragon.

The Scylding clan’s chief, Hrothgar, built a hall named Heorot (meaning Hart, a male deer) and held a banquet every day and night to celebrate. However, the giant Grendel, irritated by the great noises of the celebrations, attacked Heorot and slaughtered the Scylding clan’s men every night.

————Twelve years passed, and one warrior took along with him fifteen of his subordinates to visit Hrothgar. That warrior’s name is Beowulf. Beowulf stayed at Heorot as Hrothgar evacuated, and Grendel came around late at night. Beowulf would fight his opponent unarmed and tear off one of Grendel’s arm.

Even though it was a brief time of relief, Grendel’s mother came to snatch away and keep Grendel’s torn arm for herself, kidnapping one of Hrothgar’s men in the process. Beowulf chased Grendel’s mother and beheaded both her and Grendel.

A delighted Hrothgar gave Beowulf treasures of gold and silver, but the disinterested Beowulf returned to his own country afterwards to present the treasures to his king, Hygelac, and serve him just as how it was before. That disinterest is not only towards his allies, but also to King Hygelac, and he became a target of ridicule. Although, his fighting spirit has not been turned off.

After fifty years, Beowulf became king. However, a fire dragon, who was angry about its treasures being stolen, attacked the country Beowulf was governing, the people falling into disorder.

Reluctantly, Beowulf, in his aged body, spurred on in the direction of the dragon to exterminate it. Only one of his subordinates, a young man named Wiglaf, accompanied him, although this person has already lost his nerves while they have yet to reach the dragon. At the end of a fierce fight, Beowulf killed the fire dragon, although he also ceased breathing due to the dragon’s poison. His last request to Wiglaf is to “use the treasures for the sake of the people”, the treasures buried in Earnanæs (Whale Cape).

Although the etymology of Berserker is the word Berserk from Norse Mythology, it has been told that the name Beowulf also has its origins in the word Berserk.

Contrary to his image, this king attained greatness, someone who was dependable in the governing of the country, and moreover, was indeed respectable as a king who reigned without his selfish desires getting in the way of his governance. Beowulf himself was truly apathetic to the monarchy, but it seems that he was best suited to the role of king. This figure doing battle while gambling his life for the sake of the people, even though they said that the man was unfit to be king, is no doubt worthy of a heroic figure.

Regrettably, the epic poem of “Beowulf” has been lost with the exception of the episodes of Grendel’s and the dragon’s extermination, of which they still remain, but there is no doubt that these episodes became the source of numerous legends scattered throughout the world.

Connection with Characters

EMIYA

Not only does he use other people’s Noble Phantasms as he pleases, his method of using them is also clever; I’m quite pleased, even though I’m unable to stomach such a thing! The next time I see him, I’ll punch him!

Comment from Illustrator

I was given an impression of something like Fight Club, so since it was that, I decided on a man that seems tough and simple. Although, there is no significance of him getting darker as it was for the sake of showing the incremental differences between his stages… He is restrained to a degree with handcuffs, and given that it was established that he is at his strongest with his bare hands, the weapons are more like extras? The image of Hrunting is that of a sword that absorbs blood and becomes strong and red, while Naegling is like a nuclear explosion the moment it breaks. Although they are unused as Noble Phantasms since he is at his strongest when bare handed (LOL).
