Recommendation for what expansion to pick up?

I picked up the base game as a couples activity with my fiancé and we’ve been having a great time with it. I want to pick up an expansion but I’m not sure where to start, if it matters which one to start with, or what the difference is between the box sets and smaller packs.

Thanks for the advice in advance!

EDIT: Forgot to specify that it was the card game and not the board game.

Absolutely get Dunwich Horror, primarily for one simple reason: the Madness and Injury cards (they really should have been in the base game). Seriously, you'll thank me later, so to speak.

And I mean, Dunwich is an alright big-board expansion (not as potentially crushing as Innsmouth, not as off-the-walls as Kingsport with its Rifts). Plus Dunwich can be very thematically loaded, if you're at all into the eponymous short story 'The Dunwich Horror', or e.g. 'The Colour Out of Space' and so on.

Other than that, go nuts and pick according to your favourite Lovecraft short stories! My subjective recommendation is Innsmouth, for two reasons: A. 'The Shadow Over Innsmouth' is my second-favourite short-story (right after the aforementioned 'The Colour Out of Space'), and B. it's beginning to look a lot like... fishmen! "They can dynamite Devil Reef, but that will bring no relief, for Y'ha-nthlei is deeper than they know!"

Someone did make this handy chart, though I've not had the chance to verify it in minute detail. It seems quite functional, though. Do note that adding only one big-box expansion (Dunwich/Kingsport/Innsmouth) per game session is usually recommended, since it keeps the action "focused" and doesn't disjoint the pacing too much.

N.B. Miskatonic Horror isn't strictly necessary, even though it's a "global add-on" to any of the others. It's just, eh, "more stuff".

Thanks for the in-depth suggestion! I forgot to specify that it was the card game (until this post I didn’t realize that it was separate from the board game). Any suggestions for the LCG expansions too?

Yeah, if you don't specify the LCG everyone will assume you mean the much older and more popular board game. (In my opinion it was very silly of FFG to give the card game the same name.)

Honestly, with the LCG, first pick up two copies of the base game so you have more flexibility in deck building. Then just pick a "cycle" - that is, one of the big boxes and all the mythos packs that go with it. That gets you a full campaign to play.

Also pick up the board game, it's even better. :)

Thanks! I was having a hard time understanding the cycles. And I’ll definitely look at getting the board game once I get a place with more space (my apartment is a little cramped already)

First expansion should probably be Dunwich Horror. If you don't have space for the extra board, go with Lurker At The Threshold.

Wrong game...

Edit: Ok, LCG and not board game. I'm not familiar with the expansions for those. Thought they were asking about board game.
