a) Just because you look an 'average weight' compared to everyone else does not mean that you are at a healthy weight, it just means most people around you are also unhealthy.
b) I'm sure your GP isn't finally 'getting it', I think she has just given up trying.
I think this is a reason why it's called an "obesity epidemic". As humans, we're hard wired to compare ourselves to others to see what is "normal", and when so many of your friends, colleagues, and neighbours are obese, obesity becomes the new "normal".
How relatively 'small' some obese people can seem to modern fat-world-adjusted eyes was such a shock to me. Thankfully I'd already lost enough weight that my BMI was in the normal range again before I ever learned this, because this would have been pretty damn traumatic to my obese self. Back then, I knew I was fat, sure, but I didn't think that at size 16 I was all that unusual. I thought that the word "obese" only applied to the really big ones, those unusual folks you don't see many of, people who are big enough to need two seats. I was shocked to my toenails when I learned that 'obesity' begins at body sizes far smaller than that and that I myself at 185 lbs had been, yes, medically obese. I'd looked nowhere near that fat to myself, but I'd had no understanding of where the cutoff was. I'm down to 133 and falling now, and never in my life am I ever letting my weight get that high again.

My obesity cutoff line is at 150lbs. I knew that I was obese at my highest weight (215) but I never in a million years dreamt that the line was anywhere near 150.
It's a social contagion 😩
Now whose opinion should I trust regarding the effects of weight on health? Miss FA or the person with a medical degree? These people are shining examples of the Dunning-Kruger effect.
Hey, I have a PhD (pretty horrible delusions) from Feels University! Stop invalidating me!
When I first lost a majority of my weight this girl who lived on the same floor as I did who I occasionally hung out with said really snidely, "You just want to be hotter than the rest of us!" I shrugged cause actually, yeah? If overweight and obese is the new normal why would anyone NOT want to look better than that?
“You said it, not me.”
I just said,"Haha you got me!" and shrugged her off which seems to have worked!
When I see "average," I always think in terms of grades. I never aspired to be a "C" student, I worked harder to do better. I use that mentality in so many aspects of life.
I love how, in all these fat logic posts, these people always have mountains of health problems, but they're never tied to their weight.
i really wish this title wasn't accurate. average SHOULD be healthy
As much as I can't stand her or her views, Roaming Millennial actually touched upon this in her Body Positivity video and made a lot of sense. It doesn't make sense to make other people 'bigger', it makes sense to make everyone else smaller, because they're unhealthy. The average American woman is size 14, but that's because the average American woman is too big.
Yeah. The average person is overweight
I know what you mean about health care professionals being ignorant, too. Okay, you didn't say ignorant, I did.
That's quite the segue. "Now that you mention it, even though I did and you didn't..."
she seems to be getting it
You mean, she seems to be giving up.
I’m sure those conditions that have “nothing to do with their weight” is also the reason they can’t lose it when challenged.

Don't understand the argument that "I don't LOOK obese" is more valid than "technically I qualify as obese." Like a vague notion based on a glance is supposed to be more valid than a precise measurement? That's the argument?
I’m terrified that I’ll eat one too many plates of cheese fries and wind up at Average. Average is all around me, wheezing past me at the grocery store and happily waiting in a line of 15+ cars at the drive thru at lunchtime. In my area, Average is the stuff nightmares are made of.
